WHAT ARE PROMOTORAS?

Promotoras are health promoters or community health workers who promote health in their own communities.  They are leaders who provide peer education, support and resource linkages to individuals.  They empower others to build on their strengths.  As members of a minority and an underserved population, they are in a unique position to address unmet health needs in their communities, while providing information about health and the health care system within their culture. With the appropriate resources, training and support, Promotoras improve the health of their communities by linking their neighbors to health care and social services; by educating their peers about disease and injury prevention; by teaching coping, stress management and problem solving skills to improve mental health, depression and anxiety; by working to make available services more accessible; and by mobilizing their communities to create positive change.  Our local Southeast Stanislaus Promotora Network impacts the surrounding communities through dance therapy or zumba.  One mother started attending zumba when one of our Promotoras told her about how much better she would be if she came and started exercising and learning how to better take care of herself. The Promotora told her, “We also learn about nutrition, meal planning and there’s a support group, so we can talk about how we are feeling.” This mother who had experienced a miscarriage and was trying to cope with raising her down syndrome son was totally spent, depressed and stayed in her home crying most of the day.  She decided to take a chance and went to zumba.  Now she attends regularly and enters the room with energy and a smile.  She is no longer depressed.  This mom explained, “I did not realize how important it is to have good nutrition for our families to prevent so many diseases.  I am so happy now and I have new friends that I can trust and who help me.  By taking care of myself I can better take care of my family and we are all happier and healthier.”

We can all learn from our Promotoras the lesson of how important it is to be available for our family, friends and neighbors. As well as how important it is to ask for help when we need it, to support each other and help each other when someone is having a difficult time.  Every one of us can make a difference if we just take the time.  Thank you to our Promotoras for taking the time to provide such a beneficial service to our communities.

You can join these local Zumba classes hosted by our Southeast Stanislaus Promotoras Network.  They are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:15am to 9:15am at the Senior Community Center on 4th Street in Hughson; and every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11am to 12pm at the 1st Southern Baptist Church, 116 E. Street in Waterford.

There are also support groups that meet regularly in Hughson and at the Migrant Camp in empire. Call 883-2027 for more information.

This program is funded with contributions from our following sponsors: Sierra Vista Child & Family Services, Behavioral Health and Recovery Services, and Stanislaus County Children and Families Commission.

The Children and Families Commission of Stanislaus has been of great support in linking the families in the Southeast part of the County to a variety of much needed services.  Strengthening the existing relationships with the other collaborative agencies has been of high importance to better understand and meet the needs of each individual community.  Our collaboration with the Waterford Head Start has allowed us to provide an ongoing Parenting support group which is held at the Head Start Site. Case management services have included resource and referrals to food bank/clothes closet, health insurance enrollment, housing, and job leads/resume writing. Community outreach has included service to the Empire Elementary School, Empire Head Start, Keyes Elementary and First Step.  Information booths were available at the CSA provider fair and Waterford Head Start Fall Festival.  Car seat safety education classes were provided throughout Southeast Stanislaus County as well.  Parenting and Caregiver classes have been provided to residents of Denair and Hughson through our Friends, Family, Neighbors Program.  It has and continues to be a productive and exciting program year for the Hughson Family Resource Center.
