Communities We Serve

Hughson Family Resource Center is the hub of activities for 8 communities.
Our services are available to the residents of the rural communities of: Denair, Empire,
Gratton, Hickman, Hughson, La Grange, Robert's Ferry and Waterford.

Because of several grants and the generosity of many donors we are able to provide
counseling services, parenting classes, health insurance sign-ups, car seat safety classes,
health information and more to these neighborhoods.

Our relationships with these communities continue to grow. We are continuously
making contacts with influential community and neighborhood leaders in these areas to meet the needs of the children and families.

Denair

The history of Denair, like that of most of the San Joaquin Valley, is centered
around the railroad and the adventurous young people who settled the West.

Denair had a population of 3,446 as of 2000 census. Denair Unified School District
consists of Denair Elementary School, Denair Middle School, Denair High School,
Denair Charter Academy, a state preschool and two community day schools.

Empire

Empire is named indirectly for the original Empire City which had been situated on the south,
or opposite bank of the Tuolumne River, from the present town. The early settlement,
which had once been the Stanislaus County seat, became deserted with the decline of the river boat trade.
In 1908, a railroad station and a few buildings were erected on the present site and named Empire.

Population is 3,903 as of the 2000 census report. The school district has a
current enrollment of over 3500 students. The District has 5 Elementary Schools, and 1 Middle Schools.

Gratton

Gratton Elementary School is a small school nestled amongst the orchards of
Southeast Stanislaus County. There are generally about 125 students enrolled in the Kindergarten through
8th grade school. Gratton graduates feed into the Hughson High School to continue their education.
Their mascot is “The Wildcats”.

Hickman

Hickman’s history dates back to the Gold Rush era, and was once a stop
on a rail line (the old train stop still stands). Hickman is a country town, and the most obvious form
of income is agriculture. The population was 457 at the 2000 census.

Hickman social life revolves around its school. Hickman Charter School District is K-8. After 8th grade,
students can commute to one of the many local schools - Hughson High School
or Waterford High School. Also of note, Hickman Charter School District also has a home school program with more students than native population.
(Many students enroll from nearby cities and counties).

Hughson

The City of Hughson is a small but prospering agricultural community nestled in the heart of
the California's Central Valley. Hughson is the smallest incorporated city in Stanislaus County,
but has grown from a population of 3,259 in 1990 to 4,920 for 2002.

Schools in Hughson include:Hughson Elementary School (K-3rd grade), Fox Road School
(4th-5th grade), Ross Middle School (6th-8th grade), and Hughson High School, a preschool and a continuation high school.

La Grange

La Grange is on the Tuolumne River. In 1849 it was a mining town with large dredgers.
Residents are still mining gold in the area and raising cattle on the surrounding land.

The La Grange Elementary School District is Kindergarten through 8th grade. The school student to teacher ratio is very low.
8th grade graduates generally feed into Waterford High School.

Robert’s Ferry

The first Tuolumne River Ferry was established 3/8 mile downstream from the
Robert’s Ferry Bridge that now crosses the river. The present bridge was constructed in 1999.

Robert’s Ferry School is a kindergarten through 8th grade school with about 106 students.
It is located at 101 Robert’s Ferry Rd. The 8th grade graduates generally attend Waterford High School.

Waterford

Waterford is the 8th largest city in Stanislaus County with a population which has grown steadily
from 2,683 in 1980 to over 7,800 today. The city is surrounded by a variety and abundance of
rich agriculture. Several crops grown locally are almonds, peaches, apples, walnut, and corn.

Richard M. Moon Elementary School includes kindergarten through 2nd grade students.
Next to Richard M. Moon is the Waterford Head Start Program which includes a State preschool,
full day Head Start, and half day Head Start. Lucille Whitehead includes 3rd through 5th grade students and Waterford Middle School includes grades 6-8.
Waterford High School (WHS) was built in 2001.
